SCALE & CORROSION INHIBITOR FOR ALL SYSTEMS
Once a heating system has been power flushed to remove sludge and corrosion deposits, it is important to protect it from further deterioration.
This can be achieved by treating the system water with SYSTEMSAFE-DM, a balanced blend of corrosion and scale inhibitors, formulated to provide complete protection against system corrosion and scale formation.
It gives long term protection to central heating systems, preventing internal corrosion, scale deposition and boiler noises, and extends the life of the system and maintains its operational efficiency.
The formation of black iron oxide sludge, which accumulates in low flow areas to give flow problems and cold spots on radiators, is prevented, as is the electrolytic and oxidic corrosion which leads to localised pin-hole corrosion and leaks.
SYSTEMSAFE-DM may be used with all metals commonly used in heating systems, including iron, steel, brass, copper and aluminium. It is simply added to the heating system and requires no further action.
SYSTEMSAFE-DM has passed the Buildcert/DWTA performance test and approval process, so you can be sure that it will give long term scale and corrosion protection to heating systems.
The Benchmark Scheme aims to improve the standards of installation and commissioning of domestic heating and hot water systems in the UK and to encourage regular servicing to optimise safety, efficiency and performance. Installers are required to carry out installation, commissioning and servicing work in accordance with the Benchmark Code of Practice which is available from the Heating & Hot water Industry Council at www.centralheating.co.uk
When inhibitors are developed and tested, metallic corrosion coupons are used to evaluate the degree of protection that an inhibitor gives. These coupons are new, with clean, unmarked surfaces (see diagram 1), but radiator interior surfaces no longer look like rolled steel or aluminium once they have been in service for a few years. Instead, they often have general areas of corrosion, corrugated surfaces and even deep corrosion pits which may contain a residue of corrosion debris (see diagram 2). Power flushing with powerful chemicals can clean systems dramatically, restoring circulation and efficiency to older systems, but it cannot undo the ravages of corrosion which occur as system metals decay.
Our chemists were given the challenge of developing a special type of corrosion inhibitor that would not only maintain clean surfaces in 'as new' condition but would also work with surfaces that had already suffered from generalised corrosion and shallow pitting. The inhibitor needed to penetrate and work under any residues of corrosion in pitted areas to shield surfaces from further attack.
The result was a complex blend of components which provides a higher level of protection than that of standard inhibitors. SystemSafe-DM Concentrate gives several levels of inhibition, and includes components which ‘compete’ with chloride ions in existing pitting, displacing them and forming an inert protective layer to halt the corrosion process. It also provides excellent protection when a system has been filled with artificially softened water.
SystemSafe-DM Concentrate has passed the Buildcert/DWTA performance standard required by Building Regulations.
For new central heating systems, System Pre-Clean Concentrate removes installation debris and residues of solder fluxes, jointing compounds, copper swarf, oil, grease and even casting sand from within boiler heat exchangers. These undesirable contaminants are often the cause of serious problems within the heating system, but a hot water flush of a heating system without an effective pre-commission cleaner is unlikely to neutralise and remove them, leading to future heating problems.
Some heating systems can be susceptible to noise problems as a result of baked-on corrosion and limescale deposits on boiler heat exchangers. Whilst power flushing may cure this, on some systems it may be an ongoing problem. The addition of new System-Hush Concentrate, together with SystemSafe-DM Concentrate, is recommended to cleanse the heat exchanger during normal system operation. System-Hush Concentrate may be left in the system without draining.
All SystemSure Concentrate products may be used with all metals used in heating systems, including steel, cast iron, brass, copper, aluminium and stainless steel, and a 500ml pack is sufficient to treat a system with up to 12 radiators.
Domestic heating systems: 1 litre of SYSTEMSAFE-DM (or 500ml of SYSTEMSAFE-DM CONCENTRATE) is sufficient to treat a typical central heating system of 100 litres capacity (approx 10/12 radiators). Further addition will only be required if water losses from the system occur, and should be added at a dosage rate of 1 litre per 100 litres system capacity.
To ensure that all SYSTEMSAFE-DM enters the system, add to the feed and expansion tank after isolating water supply and draining off 15 litres (3 gallons) of water. Allow system to re-fill.
Alternatively, SYSTEMSAFE-DM may be introduced directly into a radiator, using a SYSTEMSURE injector unit.
New Systems: Before adding SYSTEMSAFE-DM to a new system, we recommend a pre-commission cleanse with SYSTEM PRE-CLEAN to remove installation and manufacturing debris such as swarf, grease and jointing paste, to mobilise and remove any dust and dirt, and neutralise any acidic flux residues.
Existing Systems: It should be noted that no corrosion inhibitor can reverse previous corrosion damage. To optimise the system efficiency, and allow SYSTEMSAFE-DM to work to best effect, particularly if the water is dirty and heavily discoloured, we advise that the system should first be flushed with HYPER-FLUSH. This is particularly important in cases where a new boiler or heat exchanger is being added to an older installation.
Correct dosage: The exact dosage rate is not critical, as SYSTEMSAFE-DM will work effectively within a +/- 20% range, but a Systemsafe-DM test kit is available to check for the optimum treatment level. The test kit determines the level of molybdate, which will be 330 ppm at the standard dosage rate. The kit contains reagents for approximately thirty tests, together with sampling syringe and test tube with colour chart and instructions.
